Boxelder Bug Control in Thousand Oaks
Ventura County’s Largest Locally Owned Pest Control Company Since 1959
Boxelder bugs are a seasonal nuisance that shows up in force each fall, clustering on sun-warmed walls and squeezing into homes through any gap they can find. Ventura Pest Control has been handling exactly this kind of pest problem since 1959, and our Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach means we look at the source of the problem, not just the insects on your wall.
As the largest and oldest locally owned pest control business in Ventura County, we bring more than six decades of regional experience to every inspection. We’re a family-owned, locally operated business, and Thousand Oaks is firmly within our service area.

What Boxelder Bugs Look Like & Why They’re on Your Property
The species found throughout California is the western boxelder bug (Boisea rubrolineata). Adults are about half an inch long, dark brown to black with distinct red lines along the wings and behind the head. Nymphs are bright red and wingless. If you’re seeing these insects massed on the sunny side of your home in late summer or fall, you’re likely watching them stage for overwintering.
Their primary food source is the seeds, flowers, and leaves of female, seed-bearing boxelder trees (Acer negundo), though they’ll also feed on maple and ash. Females lay eggs in boxelder bark cracks each spring, nymphs mature through summer, and a second generation typically reaches adult size in August and September. Once temperatures drop, large groups migrate toward sheltered spots: tree bark, rock piles, wall voids, and the interiors of homes.
Because winged adults can fly several blocks, box elder bugs may arrive even when you have no host tree on your property. A neighbor’s boxelder is enough. They won’t damage your home’s structure or pose a health threat, but their feces can stain light-colored surfaces, and crushing them releases an unpleasant odor.

How We Approach Boxelder Bug Control
Boxelder bugs overwinter in cracks, crevices, and wall voids, which means an insecticide spray alone often doesn’t resolve the problem. Effective control combines sealing entry points with targeted treatment, addressing both the bugs present and the gaps that let them in. Our IPM approach is built around that logic.
During the free inspection, we identify the host trees attracting bugs to your property, locate the entry points they’re using, and assess conditions around the foundation that encourage congregation. From there, we tailor a treatment plan to what we actually find rather than applying a one-size-fits-all solution.
Where perimeter treatment is appropriate, our technicians apply targeted pyrethroid applications around the foundation following protocols designed to prevent pesticide runoff into storm drains. Exclusion work targets the cracks and gaps around doors, windows, and vents that let bugs inside. The result is a plan built around your specific property, not a generic insect problem.
