Centipedes vs. Millipedes: What You’re Dealing With

These two pests are often confused, but they behave very differently. Centipedes have one pair of legs per body segment and move fast, darting across floors or walls at night when they hunt other insects. Millipedes have two or more pairs of legs per segment and move slowly in a wavelike motion, curling into a tight coil when disturbed. Knowing which one you have helps determine the right response.

What each one actually poses as a risk:

• Centipedes are beneficial arthropods that prey on flies, cockroaches, and other household insects. They don’t damage plants or household items, though a larger species can deliver a painful bite with localized swelling and numbness if provoked.
• Millipedes feed on decaying organic matter and play a useful role outdoors. They don’t bite, but if handled or threatened they can release an irritating defensive liquid that may irritate skin on contact.

Three millipede species are common in California: the common millipede, the bulb millipede, and the greenhouse millipede. None damage structures or stored food, but large numbers appearing inside are a sign of conditions worth correcting.

Why They End Up Inside

Both pests thrive in damp, dark environments. Outdoors, you’ll find them under leaf litter, mulch, stones, and decaying wood along the foundation. Centipedes come indoors to hunt their insect prey, settling into basements, closets, and bathrooms. Millipedes tend to gather near building foundations in the fall and enter through cracks and gaps in search of moisture.

Millipede invasions typically resolve on their own within a few days. Repeated or heavy activity, though, usually points to a moisture problem or a habitat issue around the perimeter that warrants professional attention.
